CPSs carry the message that “Healing is a Self-Determined Process.” CPSs believe that by sharing their wisdom, strength, and hope with others (including people using services, mental health professionals, and policymakers). CPSs can significantly impact peoples’ beliefs about their own capacity to heal and the capacity of others to heal with the experiences they’ve lived through. The 3 Core Competencies of Certified Peer Specialists are Peer Support, In but Not of The System, and Change Agent. The Mental Health Peer Support Movement is connected to the Consumer/Survivor/Ex-patient Movement and the Disability Rights Movement. There are over 1,600 Certified Peer Specialists in the State of Massachusetts, CPSs are trained and certified by the Kiva Centers, the Commonwealth’s accredited Statewide Mental Health Peer Support Training and Networking organization.
